How do you get a job as a roustabout on offshore oil rigs?

i have sent letters of to a few companies asking what opportunities they have available but haven't recieved any replies.On all of the websites i go on seem to lots of jobs for drillers but not roustabouts.can anyone help please?How do you get a job as a roustabout on offshore oil rigs?
(UK answer) it helps if you already have your surivival certificate so the employing company don't have the expense themselves.





I'd say you have to be under 35, physically tough and with a good sense of humour because you are going to need it. Brains ( contrary to popular opinion) are also needed but qualifications aren't . You have to be mentally tough. You have to get on with people, if you are the sneaky or sensitive type your life will be hell so forget it.





The way these companies work is, they do not hold on to applications. It's purely down to luck. They might be looking for someone, and your application arrives the same day. In which case you get lucky. They are as shallow as that, some of them. They don't have a big filing cabinet full of applications. The other thing to be aware of is ( if it's an aberdeen company) your application was probably opened by some 20-something junior assistant secretary type of girl. In which case, you are not from Aberdeen so guess where your application will end up.





The best - and most common-way is to get offshore is with the ';friend of a friend'; technique, get someone to recommend you, to put a word in for you.


The offshore game is surprisingly small and most people know each other in one way or another, it's a small world.





Sorry but that's the reality, but just keep looking because endurance is also one of the qualities theyre looking for!! There's no in harm sending applications again and again.








Being from within 20 miles of aberdeen increases your chances


Being ex-forces increases your chances


Being an aussie or Kiwi can increase your chances too, for some reason.
